My Research Papers, Projects, & Creative Writing

Below are mostly .pdf copies of papers I have written for classes, and I cover more than social topics normally found under the umbrella of Sociology.  I believe it is a great example of my ability to tackle just about any topic.  I've grouped the documents by topic.  I hope you enjoy!

Creative Writing

All of the items below were submitted as part of assignments for EH 400 Creative Writing at Athens State University, taken during the Spring 2014 term.  There were a lot of items I submitted for assignments, but these are a few I care to share with an unlimited audience.

Gigantopithecus
A short musing on a word that tends to get stuck in my head.

Smells, Sounds, and the Pain of it all
Short reflection of visiting my mom in a nursing home

The Alien Dream
Part of the Writing Journal kept for class, I wrote about a strange dream I had.

A Real Family: No Fairy Tales Here
A four-page Creative Non-Fiction assignment where I reflect upon my misadventures in motherhood.  It has been four years since I read this and there is really only one thing I should add to this piece: if you plan on having children, but haven't yet, wait to read this.  Motherhood is scary sometimes.

Melancholy for Miles
A nine-page Creative Fiction assignment about a woman whose mother has passed.  I wrote this just a few months before my own mother passed, and when I looked back at the story a while after her passing, I realized I had a lot of the same feeling of the fictional character I wrote about in this assignment.  My only regret is the silly name I picked for a little town in the story, but the name was part of the story itself.  Later I found out the name of the town is an actual town name.

Freelance Web Content

Poetry Speaks to the Whole Family
Book review written in 2005 for a publisher and posted on a personally owned website (no longer functional), and for submission to Amazon as a review, in addition to ezinearticles.com for free reprint.  This was my first book review written as a freelance reviewer for publishers.  Before I knew it, publishers were sending me book after book, asking for me to read and review them.  It has been six years since I wrote my last book review for my blog, The Family Reader.  However, it is still available to view with the priginal content.   You can read more about my freelance book reviews on this blog.
